Sewer line issues are completely hidden and not part of a regular home inspection. The only way to know the condition of the line is to run a camera through it.
This era includes a wide mix of sewer materials — clay, cast iron, and early PVC piping.
Issues we've found in 1970–1999 homes:
- Old clay tile with gaps and tree root intrusion.
- Cast iron under the home that's severely scaled or corroded.
- Mixed material transitions (clay to cast to PVC) that are misaligned or leaking.
- Lines that haven't been scoped or maintained in decades.
Real example: We scoped a 1986 property where roots penetrated through clay joints and met rusted cast iron under the slab. Full line replacement: $24,000. With the full picture, the buyers could make an informed decision.
